No time to Mooch in May

Here in SE Queensland a razor edged chill is already slicing through our morning air. The rains have eased and the sunshine begs one to role up their sleeves. It's almost winter but there's still time to reflect on Mothers' Day...I enjoyed one of the best in years. Definitely something to be said for a child's choice of gift as they advance in years. Still I cherish the handmade books and cards and proud smiles above all else.

The Gold Coast held its annual Literati Festival this month as well. This free event hosted by Gold Coast Council Libraries spanning two days, enabled anyone with a love of books, reading and writing to participate in a range of seminars and author encounters. It's an excellent vehicle for learning more about the craft of writing and industry supporting it. This year featured authors included Nick Earls, Angela Savage, Tess Evans, Louise Cusack, Kate Holden and Phil Brown to name a few. Definitely worth marking in your calendar for next year.

Yesterday I attended the launch of Peter Carnavas new picture book, "The Great Expedition" at The Avid Reader Book Shop in Brisbane. Peter delighted young and old a like with his accordion playing and warmed us all with his story inspired by the great journey of explorers Burke and Wills. Can't wait for the next one.

Congratulation Dim this is great! I've fed your fish for your today - lol. Since you asked our favourite childrens books had to have huge bright pictures and the story would rhyme. Among the favourites were Edward the Emu by Sheena Knowles, Bush Babies by Kim Dale , and even though my children are now 14 and 16yrs old we still sing wombat stew (from Wombat Stew by Marcia Vaughan). Also we loved the old english ladybird fairy tale books. We had to read Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Gingerbread Man over and over and over. Wishing you the best of luck with this exciting new adventure. xx

I love the look of your writing blog! I unfortunately missed the Literati Festival this year but I've learnt so much from the authors in previous years.

Tristan Bancks signed my copy of Detention with a note hoping it kept me turning pages . This book lived up to that promise and then some. Packed with page-turning tension and relentless drama, this is one middle grade novel that may cause a few kids to miss their dinner call. I've got a dream

Almost a decade of moons ago, I made a serendipitous discovery that forever altered the spin of my world. Falling pregnant after so many years of waiting and yearning was nothing short of miraculous (for me) and a life event definitely worth waxing lyrical about. But did I? Sadly, not as much I as wanted to. There are those who find it hard to exist without sharing the contents of their dinner plates with the rest of  the world, then there are others who worry that a beautifully executed birthday cake photo shared on social media will somehow demean the starving populations of the world. I oscillate between the two but tend towards the latter, always fretting over how others will take good news in light of their own current situations and struggles, thus resorting to a severe downplaying of my own good fortune.
